Heritage Conservation - Theories, Principles and Practices

This module is intended to give students a practical understanding of the key principles, theories and methods of documentation of heritage conservation to enable us to understand the importance of preserving cultural and architectural heritage. We will develop our awareness and understanding of the different approach of heritage conservation of buildings and landscapes. We will also explore the differences between conservation, restoration and reconstruction within a historical and cultural context.
Project 1
Case Study Analysis and Awareness Slide Report Presentation
This assignment aims to instil firm basic understanding and appreciation for heritage and conservation practice through site visit, interviews, talks, discussion, case studies, research, and recording. Group project, which required us to find, research, analyse and present four 5 case studies of heritage conservation projects of a small (min 300sqm) to medium size building (max 1500sqm). The projects should comprise international projects and minimum one local project. One of the projects should be a post-modern design. while for individual project, we are required to present a discussion, elaboration, and thoughts on one of the 7 Lamps of Architecture by John Ruskin and to relate it to the “appreciation, awareness and the importance of architectural heritage and conservation”.

Individual Project
Reflection
In this project 1, we have two parts to do which is group project and individual project. In the group projects, all group members worked well and task was distributed fairly. All students took part in the project. In this project, I have learned and understand the basic principles and concepts of heritage conservation and documentation as well as the management processes. Besides that, in the individual project, I have learned the 7 lamps of architecture by doing researches and watching videos, understand it and apply in into the case study regarding the appreciation, awareness and the importance of architectural heritage and conservation.
Project 2
Heritage and Conservation Proposal Report Presentation
In this project, we are required to prepare a Heritage and Conservation Proposal Report on the selected given heritage buildings at Sungai Buluh Leprosarium; (Chalet No. 483). The client (PKKN) has requested to make improvements and to add additional toilets and kitchen without loosing the character of the existing chalet. For my group, we are required to improve a vacant chalet and to include a kitchen and an attached or detached toilet for future visitors to rent the units individually. The proposal report shall refer to ICOMOS Charter – Principles for the Analysis Conservation and Structural Restoration of Architectural Heritage – 2003 document and the Jabatan Warisan Negara guideline (Garis Panduan Pemuliharaan Bangunan Warisan 2016). We are required to propose a conservation approach and solutions and usage proposal for the given building.
Reflection
In this project 2, i have learned more and understand more deeper about the heritage conservation. I have also understood the process of heritage conservation, from the first step of visiting the site to be conserved until the part on dilapidation survey and to propose and idea on the conservation work. Within this project, i have gained deeper understanding on the sungai buloh leproserium or know as valley of hope, the history, heritage, memories were so touched. I hope further conservation work must be done to keep the heritage of this country that full of significant value alive and keep until the future generations.
